Two of my girlfriends were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. It was then that I was inspired to make a difference. I signed up for my first Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure walk in 2010. Why would I ever dare to walk 60 miles in 3 days? Because it's BIG and it's BOLD, and it makes a statement. I walk to celebrate the remarkable woman who won the battle with breast cancer. I walk to honor the all of the amazing woman who continue to fight this ugly disease. I walk to remember those who are no longer with us. I walk for my daughter, my nieces and their future. I walk for you and me. I walk because I want to live in a world without breast cancer.

I have been inspired by Christine to walk in my first Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. I have been so blessed lately & thought what better way to celebrate my 40th year on this earth than to pay my blessings forward. I will be walking to honor "Aunt" Fran Fitzgerald & Aunt Judy Haney both who lost their lives to Breast Cancer. I will walk in celebration of the fight of Debbie Helenski Bickings,
I am walking for the future of every single woman in my life whom I love very much, my daughters my mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins and friends!

I started to show support for my 2nd cousin, Heidi, who was a long time fighter of breast cancer, as well as in support of one of my friend Kay’s good friend Beth, who was fighting Stage 5 Breast Cancer. In the past 5 years both Heidi and Beth have passed away from this terrible disease but not without a fight. They both left behind families that loved them and children that miss them daily. Also within the past several years Laurie, my friend Paige’s mother, was diagnosed. I sat in the hospital while she underwent her mastectomy and knew I had to keep fighting. I fight for those who are no longer here to fight, I fight for those who are undergoing treatment and can’t fight. I fight because it could be me, it could be you, it could be our children next. I have met so many amazing and brave people through out my participation in 2 Avon Walks for Breast Cancer and the Susan G Komen Walk. I encourage everyone to be a part in some form or fashion. It is a life changing experience and is so empowering to see people come together and making a difference.

Abby planted the seed and I accepted the challenge. My journey started by walking in the 2010 Susan G. Komen for the Cure and by proving to myself that I could in fact walk the entire 60 miles. Not only was it a journey of self discovery I also learned so much about the fight against Breast Cancer. I never knew how many lives this disease actually affects. Last year I walked with my sister (Camille) and her friends (Abby & Lindsay), our relationships grew from our experience together. They all have truly become my sisters. I walk for those who are no longer here. I walk for those who are undergoing treatment. Breast Cancer could affect you, me and our children next. I have met so many amazing and brave people throughout my participation in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. I would encourage everyone to do the walk at least once because it will change your life forever.

started to ask the more important questions- How many women does this effect every year? How can I help find a cure? Being a part of the 3 Day was a life changing experience. The walkers, crew, and supporters make up a wonderful community of caring people who genuinely want to find a cure for breast cancer. There are so many amazing women (and men) who have survived breast cancer, but there are still so many whose lives were cut short by this terrible disease. My team and I are walking for all those people and for our mothers, sisters, daughters, nieces and friends.

This is a tremendous challenge and journey that I have been contemplating for quite sometime now. I truly didn't know if I could do it but I decided I have to do it because the cause is that important and worthwhile. My close friend's mom is battling this disease again for the fourth time and I walk for her. She is courageous and determined woman. One of my male employees was diagnosed with breast cancer some years back and he is a survivor, I walk for him and all the others who are battling this disease. Since I've made this decision to walk for the cure, I have been astonished at how many men and women have battled this disease that I know personally but never would have known about their personal battle with cancer had I not been involved with this event and team. This is an amazing opportunity for me and I am grateful for it.

I first heard of The Ta-Ta Sisterhood through my friend Heather, she had joined to do her first walk this year and was very excited about it. After being completely inspired by her, I decided to join as well! I am extremely excited for the walk in October and to have joined such a great team of fabulous women. I am walking to find a cure, so that no woman has to suffer with having breast cancer. When I first told my mom about the walk, I was a little reserved and said “60 miles is a lot, and I bet those blisters will be painful” and she responded, “The little pain you may endure on this walk is NOTHING compared to what a cancer patient has to go through”. After this conversation I knew I was doing this walk and I would do it with no complaints! I am walking to find a cure, to help better research, and to help cover the cost of procedures.
I had heard about the 3-Day and had done some minor fundraising for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, but I had never seriously considered participating in the event until this year. Suddenly I realized that I had a lot of friends plus multiple previous patients to honor; and at 66, if I didn’t do it now, I might never do it. I walk to honor Sharon, Barbara and Shirley, my first close patients who died of breast cancer. I walk to honor my friend Beth, who died of breast cancer. I walk to honor Leslie Y. who beat this disease, and I walk for Barbara, Cheri, Deannie, Elaine, Mary, and Pat who are all fighting this disease. I walk for my three daughters and my 6 grandchildren. And I walk for all those who have supported me in this endeavor. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers as I walk.
